Hugh, What do you mean/understand 'Wait time' to be?
I can understand writing a CD from files stored in memory, but surely your memory would not hold the 4.5Gb of data that can be put on a DVD Also - for XP I would certainly recommend 1GB rather than 512Mb of memory for a working environment where there are several applications 'open' at the same time that are not contending for resources other than memory- such as: Binary file download (ftp etc) disk-disk copy ( multiple drives ) Disk to/from DVD Excel, Word - processing small, simple files I would consider 512Mb to be the minimum for mixed application work under 2K and XP My 2K system with 512Mb memory usually runs a pagefile of about 750Mb, with occasional expansion up to 1Gb (The system does have 4 hard drives and, according to task monitor, and Norton Utilities, has been known to run 20Mb/sec transfer - moving data from 1 drive to another, and then back is faster than a 1 drive defrag ) JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hugh Gundersen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 29, 2005 10:16 PM Subject: Re: How much memory is enough? Umpteen windows open without any slow down and swapping between progs is instant like the coffee. Definately a good idea if you do a lot of memory intensive work otherwise stick with 512.
