Just a little update on this and thanks to those who offered advice. A Seagate Momentus 40GB 2.5" hdd came along at a very good price, bigger and faster spin speed than the original so I was a little doubtful, but in it went. I was even more surprised using the HP discs to install the os and the drivers all went without a hitch and never even asked for the serial no for XP. A very different experience to the troubles I've had with things HP previously. The owner reports it works better than when it was brand new so they are happy too.
