that could be because you are consistently using the wrong nomenclature, 
most app's options will say something along the lines of "show icon in 
SYSTEM TRAY y/n", and if they are running and not showing in task 
manager they may be services, so you will have to disable the service or 
remove the app completely (I cant see any reason to run stuffit ALL the 
time for instance). Or could they be running in task manager and you 
dont recognise the name (some are pretty obscure)? Go with "hide 
inactive icons" far the easiest way to go
