One item that is essential in redoing any machine is to be sure
to have the MB chipset drivers, especially if the machine has a
newer chipset that may not be included natively in XP. Without
the correct chipset drivers, bus devices will not be properly
recognized and will usually refuse to use the correct device
driver provided for them. The "New hardware found" loop on
reboot is the typical result. :)
Spyware keeps me VERY busy too. And since I am based on a
college campus (when I am not traveling around the state), I
see a **LOT** of it.

No argument about uninstalling all the Gateway trash. I
checked the Gateway site, and all the drivers and such seem
to be available. I think I'll delete the partition and let
xp reformat before install. I can download the Ethernet
driver if I need to on my machine and copy it over to CD.
The rest of the stuff on the machine isn't really needed or
wanted by the owner. She is reclaiming it from a college
student (her daughter) who now has a laptop to crap up with
spyware. This is the second machine I've had to retrieve for
them. Spyware keeps me in business.
