Transferring a domain's registration is usually unnecessary.

I understand that, but if I get one through Yahoo.Com, what's my relationship with them?

They are your domain registrar. Aside from leasing you the right
to use that domain name, they give you a few other basic goodies
to go along with that. It depends on the registrar. As I understand it,
Yahoo will forward your domain email for free to a Yahoo email account.
Most other registrars will forward domain mail to any other email address.

Wouldn't I have to transfer my domain name "from" them "to" somebody else in order for it to do any good whatsoever.........assuming I didn't want Yahoo to host it?

It depends on what you mean by "host it." If you want to have a
fullblown/customizable web page, then yes, you will have to obtain the services of a web hosting company. The web hoster will give you
a pair of nameserver names, which you enter into your Yahoo
domain control panel, which results in the domain name pointing to
the new web host.

If you need only domain email, you don't need any "hosting".
