As Rick and Carl indicate there are lots of variables and things to consider, especially what are D and E ??
But - assuming the new drive is bigger than your old C: partition, and the old system not only runs the OS from drive C, but boots from it as well, and has adequate space to boot and run from the C partition, then why not use partition manager software something like partition manager, or Acronis - etc (Google, or look at Tucows for free stuff) to copy your C: (booting) partition to the new drive Switch the drives, and use the XP manage facility to ensure the partition letters are assigned with the old letters, except for the new C partition Check that the system works Then, you can copy all the stuff from the old F to the old C and change the id's so that the old C partition is now called F You now have the possibility of booting from the old C - as a recovery measure Applications may not work but you do have a bootable OS and your stuff that was on F is still on the old partition as a backup and you have your normally used OS on the new drive (changing the boot drive may require activation but that shouldn't be a problem) Me - I would partition the new drive as 2 NTFS partitions - 1 for your OS, (perhaps 30Gb) and 1 for other stuff including temporary storage of a backup image of your OS partition - so that backup of your OS is fairly small, and an OS restore will not put all your stuff back to the old date/status Main thing is that you do need a partition manager or partition/disk copy software package to start this process Check the archives - there have been quite a few discussions on drive upgrades JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carl Houseman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2005 2:23 AM Subject: Re: Help with upgrading Hard Drive. > This might be the best solution: > http://www.spearit.com/new_drive.html > > Disclaimer: I have never used that program.
