From: "James Maki"
I had a salesman tell me back in about 1983 that I should purchase a HI-FI
VHS VCR and hook it up to my stereo as a replacement for a reel-to-reel tape
deck. He said at the time, "everybody is doing it," because the reel-to-reel
is becoming an obsolete dinosaur for the home market. At the time, blank
hi-fi vhs tapes were still pretty expensive, so I stuck with cassettes.
VHS tape was $24-US... I did a small amount of VHS-PCM but even then
was worried about the system becoming obsolete...
I has recently started converting some 30+ year old cassettes to CD,
They hiss a little, but I always pre-proccessed the input sound to push them
to the limits, with both a graphic equalizer and dynanic range "crushing"...
(I reget I could not afford the analog "pop" removers for records...)
