As a matter of fact, this site recommends Spyware Doctor as one of the top
spyware/adware applications. It isn't free. Costs between 19.95 and 29.95 for
the registered version that will clean the pests found in the free download. I
suspect you're correct in finding MRU's.
I've been going crazy. I run Pest Patrol for spyware, adware, etc and AVG for
other virus stuff and 1 or 2 times a week trendmicro's house call.
The page above indicates that the best spyware tools still only find about 50%
of the infested stuff. I was surprised at this. Pest Patrol also only finds
about 50%. As a matter of fact, none of the programs evaluated by him found
more than 50%. One dipped as low as 38%.
Now, the reason this bothered me was that daily running of Pest Patrol and AVG
usually finds nothing. However, when I downloaded and ran Spyware Doctor, it
found something like 335 infested files/registry locations and values, etc.
OK, so I downloaded MS's AntiSpyware program;it found seven infected items that
Pest Patrol had missed.
I then installed Ad-Aware SE. It found an additional 61 infested items. Upon
looking at it, most were mru's, backup files in the system volume info folder
and some bho's such as google, yahoo, copernic search engines, etc.
I also ran Hijackthis and it found about a hundred infested items, but it is
easy to scan and see they if are real or not. many again were search engine
bho's etc that i recognized.
But, the bottom line, who do you trust? All of the above are free except Pest
Patrol and Spyware Doctor. These two along with Ad-Adware and MS's AntiSpyware
were four of the best seven programs.
