Did you mean ATA-66 or higher?

This point is often missed - it'a parallel, but one at a time, plus some
negotiations.

This can still be set, when using on-board controller, but most PCI
controllers (Promise) do it automatically. There's no option in the Promise
driver for DMA.
Now that we're talking controllers and speed... one thing I still have not
tracked down is the effect of one drive on another, when on the same
controller cable.
In the older controllers (33 and older) the controller defaulted to the
slower of the two drives, but at least with PCI controllers ATA-66 and on,
the two drives are more independant.
Do not know if this also true for on-board ATA-66 controllers? Are the two
drives independant, or is the CD or DVD drive dragging down the HD?
