Did the chkdsk complete without fixing anything? If something was fixed,
you need to repeat it until nothing is fixed. If you complete 3 runs of
CHKDSK /R (not CHKDSK /F as I wrote before) and things are still being fixed
on the 3rd try, chances are the hardware is hosed.

As for the fixboot, I don't believe anything is supposed to happen on screen
other than the prompt returns.

Beyond this, you're not going to get much further without an XP CD. You
need the correct XP CD for any machine which you intend to maintain or fix.
If you don't have it, your choices are:
a) borrow it
b) buy it
c) have someone else fix the machine

Subject: Re: Boot.ini

When I did this it came back to ask me the location of autochk.exe, I was
able to satisfy that request by telling it that it was in windows\system32,
but
here is my new problem after it completed the chkdsk I typed in fixboot and

nothing happened.

As you all know I am doing all this to get past the problem of getting the
message unmountable boot volume when I am booting up. I do not have the
Windows XP CD.
Thanks, Jerry..

Boot into recovery console and do a
CHKDSK /F
at the C: prompt. Then reboot.

If no help, do a repair install of XP.

A repair install is generally safe and harmless to data files, programs,
and
user settings. However, if you have important data that is not backed up -
i.e. you can not afford for the hard drive to go up in flames in the next
30
seconds (which is unlikely but always possible), then you should make plans
to backup your data first.
