I'm very happy with Toshiba - my two HPs had a problem with the power supplies
and I'm not too keen on the brand now. Several friends have fujitsu tablets and
love them.

One requirement when I replaced my HP was a smaller screen size - even 15" is
too big to use on a plane or in the front seat of the car. Friends with wide
screens say they are really desktop replacements and not suitable for travel -
they are heavier and using a wide screen on a plane is out of the question.
They liked them for movies and they allowed easier side by side viewing of docs
- but otherwise were less than practical. So... if you don't need portability,
wide screen might be useful for you.

If weight is a concern, get one with a portable DVD/RW. I'm very happy with the
USB DVD/RW and floppy drives I have.

Some friends love the AMD chip in laptops, I went for the centrino because I
wanted intel (plus Toshiba only uses centrino AFAIK)

All newer models should have wireless cards built in - probably g cards unless
it's an older model.

Standard size should be 60 GB hard drive - that should be enough and I probably
wouldn't go with less. (I'm a disk hog and put a 100 GB in mine - and it's
full.)

Many laptop brands are designed so you can upgrade them - at least for ram and
hd. I would suggest getting a 512 and using crucial for more ram - or at least
price it both ways. If you decide to do this, I'd recommend a laptop that can
eventually go up to 2 GB - many still top out at 1 GB.

I have to buy a new laptop, which I experience as seriously traumatic, and
I haven't seen any discussions lately of the kind of laptop I need -- the
one on Dave's problem was too short! -- so would like to run it by you all.
I am mad at Dell, and am considering boycotting them this time around,
although my mind isn't entirely made up. It's because of their service
interface and their policies, not because I don't like the computer that
Wayne picked out for me!

My needs are simple -- top speed is not an issue (but I don't want a
Celeron chip), and neither is a megahuge hard drive, (although I'm not sure
what size makes sense for today's programs). I do need a wireless
connection and I need tons of memory, because I keep sometimes six or seven
word files open at a time, and myth to the contrary, the computer just
hates it. I have 500+ K of RAM now, and it's not enough. I'd also like to
know what people think about wide vs. regular screens. As a word person, it
seems to me that height is more important than width, but maybe that's
shortsighted. Don't know if firewire is necessary or if they all come with
it.

I know that people in the past have thought well of HPs and IBMs, but now
that IBM is Lenovo I dunno if that still counts. I had a Fujitsu once long
ago and loved it, but haven't heard much about them recently except for
Claudia's recommendation a few weeks ago. Don't want to spend any more than
necessary. Haven't seen any reviews in mags that have addressed my needs,
so would be interested to know what people think.
