Scrounging around on Dell's website, I gather that the
256M base RAM on the i2200 is not removable. However,
the machine's RAM is upgradeable, maxing out at 1.2GB.

I don't think that the second RAM slot is under the keyboard.

The plastic flap shown in the part of the manual your link refers to has a
metal plate firmly attached to the circuit board and, believe me it can't be
removed. I discussed this with a support person from Crucial - the firm I
bought the upgrade from. This guy was adamant that I should NOT attempt to
remove the metal cover. So that leaves under the keyboard as Gary explained
later - so here goes......
