Consider that the 'input' 'cooler' air gets pushed through the heat exchanger, and then, having been heated can just circulate back to the intake side of the fan !
Consider that I improved the cooling of one of my systems by taping over the extra holes in the back of the case and fitting a cardboard baffle to direst the air the fans push out away from the 'intake' side of the case, rather than letting it just hit the wall behind the system and 'mushroom' back around the case. Also inside the case it can be advantageous ( depending on the case and fan positioning ) to have a couple of strips of non-inflammable material to guide airflow into the circuitry on the motherboard, rather than just through the empty space and into the extractor fan - well positioned and bent ribbon cables can be ideal for that. Also - the MOBO should not be touching the case - there is normally a ΒΌ" gap - airflow through that can be very effective, but the space can also be a very nasty dust trap.
