Greetings...

I was reading a newspaper article about running applications on a U3 Cruzer
Micro
(USB flash/jump drive). Here is a portion of the article: "Think of a hotel room
with a generic computer in each room, already connected to the Internet. You
plug
in your U3 Cruzer Micro, run the applications you have on the flash drive and
remove the drive when you're done, leaving no trace of your data on the host.
It is
the ultimate in convenience." I've found more information on the apps at:
http://u3.sandisk.com/download/utilities_table_no.asp .

I have a friend in a organization where there are WinXP Pro user desktops with
limited functionality (admin lockout) and with no ability to install any
programs.

Is it possible to use something like U3 apps on a USB drive to increase user
functions/programs, which would be removed when the USB drive is removed?

As I recall there are some apps that don't need to change the registry in order
to
function which, I assume, is what an Admin locks to prevent new installs.

My friend would like to use FireFox/Opera or a tabbed interface (eg.
SlimBrowser)
to Internet Explorer, a better Windows file manager (eg. Total Commander or
PowerDesk), Copernic, Atomic Clock utility, screen capture and image utility,
etc.

I'm thinking one way to create/test a USB tool containing various programs is to
create a limited user account on my own system and then test various programs
whether they will function without installing. As I recall there was a thread
recently about a utility which didn't have to be installed in order to "work".

However, I'm also wondering about the potential of a BartPE USB configuration
(or
maybe I'm talking "apples and oranges") which would meet my friend's needs.

Many thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.
