My wife called me from work this morning with this problem.

She and the woman she shares and office with have identically-set-up
PCs. Both use Thunderbird POP3/SMTP for email. Each has her own email
account.

My wife can send emails without problem but her officemate frequently
gets the "cannot connect to [SMTP server name]" error message, even
when they are sending emails at the same time.

I was just suggesting that you should find out where the problem lies. It's
either a configuration issue in Thunderbird, which is probably buried
somewhere in the settings or in an INI file, or a network/OS problem (more
likely, since you said they're configured identically).

If you can't ping and/or connect manually using Telnet when you are having
errors on the "bad" machine, the problem is not in Thunderbird, but
somewhere else. On the other hand, if ping and Telnet are fine, the problem
is buried somewhere in Thunderbird. I know it won't solve the problem, but
it will at least help narrow your focus.

I went there today because the officemate's email wasn't working at all. I verified that and tried a cold boot. That seemed to help. I checked configurations until I was blue in the face as they say, but the only diff I found was that the OM's machine required a username for the SMTP server and my wife's did not. Same server, same port!

So I left. When I got home, my wife called to say that her email wasn't working. She could send to someone in the same (Internet) domain but not to anyone outside!

I found out one interesting thing. The TCP/IP is configured with an "automatic" IP and DNS, but the DNS server appears to be the router and when I changed to a known good DNS server IP address, DNS didn't work at all. What does that tell you?

Thanks.
