Well, I had the pleasure this evening of installing Trends PCCillin Internet
Security 2006 product after ripping out Norton. Client had Norton Antivirus
2005 on 3 machine and 2003 on 1 machine, all machines also had Zone Alarm
Pro. In all cases the licenses were going to expire today or within a few
days.

Since they got a new machine to replace the old one, I needed to order a new
license for that one. Looking at the deals at Symantec's website, I settled
on a 3pack of Norton AV 2006 and a single Norton AV 2006 upgrade (for the
2003 machine), the single upgrade was $40 while the 3pack was $89. I went
throught the checkout and at various points it showed a single License copy
for NAV2k5 in place of the 3pack 2k6. On the final invoice it still showed
2k5, but the emailed copy of the invoice showed the 2k6 3pack. I called the
webstore support and was told they'd escalated it but it could take 1-4
business days to be resolved, I pointed out that the current licenses expired
at midnight today. The rep then suggested they could extend the expiry date
by 30 days, however since I never register the software online, they didn't
have any of the licenses on file. I read one of the activation keys the rep,
but she couldn't find it. She then said she could give me a 15 day trial. I
explained (acting as the client since it was paid for with the client's
credit card) that we have a technician sitting here at $75/hr and it needed
to be resolved today, she suggested I call the subscription department to
register the current licenses and then maybe they could extend the
subscription, I said okay fine, if they can't, I'll call back and cancel the
order and take my business elsewhere. After 20 minutes on hold I decided to
try something else. I called back and cancelled the order, they were quick
with this and there was no problem. I then looked at the cost for Zone Alarm
Security Suite, us$70 each or us$289 for 5 licenses, next looked at Trend's
site, PC Cillin Internet Security 2006 was us$150 for 5 licences. I'd heard
good things online and on several mailing lists about it. I was not to be
dissapointed

Ordered the package, downloaded it, while that was happening uninstalled
Norton and ZoneAlarm on the 4 computers. Download package was no more than
30mb or so and installed quickly, on reboot, didn't see the sluggish
behaviour NAV usually causes. Settings were easy to configure, seems to have
a lot of features for dealing with malware, spyware, adware, browser
hijacking etc. Interface is well laid out and quite zippy even on slower
hardware. Gotta say, I highly recommend it now! Unlike Zone Alarm Security
Suite, it doesn't seem to popup a lot of security alerts/questions,
especially for normal networking stuff. Also unlike Norton and Zone Alarm,
the peer to peer network, just worked after install, with the competition,
you usually have to setup the trusted zone in the software before being able
to access file shares on another computer. Another big plus, system resource
usage, particularly ram, is much less than with ANY norton product.

Only 2 problems

1) during install, you have choice for full or minimal, there is NO custom
option.

2) Manage Private Networks feature didn't seem to work. This allows you to
set the same password on each machine and be able to see and manage the scans
and settings for all the machines from within the software on 1 machine.
Basically I couldn't get any of the machines to see all 3 others, each one
would see at most 1 or 2 other machines, or in most cases no other machines.
I plan to call trend about this tomorrow, if this works reliably, it pretty
much puts all the other internet security suites to shame.

I think, now that I've seen it working I may end up replacing my Norton/Zone
Alarm combo with this suite when they expire in the next 6 months or so.
