I realise this is a longshot, but if the PC is running on an NForce
motherboard with the Forceware drivers you can examine the IDE
controller in Device Manager and it will tell you which device is
attached to which channel along with its operating mode.
I'm not sure if it tells you if they are using cable select or if
they've been jumpered though.
