Hi Carl,

It's nice to be able to offer _you_ some advice for a change!

While I haven't directly used this service myself I would recommend against it. These sites appear to be trying to sell Peer To Peer software that you could easily get for free.

Once you have the software you have access to the very same files that people using the free clients also have access to. These files will come with the same copyright dilemmas.

For example, there is a popular, free, open-source P2P program called Emule. It can be obtained from http://www.emule-project.net/

However, take a look at the following sites:-

http://www.download-it-free.com/emule/
http://www.free-emule.com/

They both offer very similar claims to the ones you've seen. They both offer a supposedly free client, but eventually want to charge you for access. Once you are logged onto the Emule network it doesnt matter *which* client you use, they *all* have access to the exact same files.

So, in my opinion these sites are just ways of trying to make money out of peoples fear over P2P. "If I've paid for access to P2P then everything on it must be legal, right...?"

There are a large number of copycat sites, all trying to do the same thing for various other P2P clients. For example, here is one based around a site that used to provide BitTorrent links:-

http://www.suprnova.net/join1.php

It looks VERY similar to one of the pages above, doesn't it? Probably run by the exact same people.

As an aside, I do not believe that P2P is inherantly more prone to trojans, spyware, viruses and so on. I have dabbled and have never downloaded a virus laden file. Its true that some viruses target certina filesharing programs, but they tend to do this by copying themselves into a default Shared directory hoping that someone will download and run them, rather than exploiting a specific hole in a P2P program. In this regard it's no different from a virus copying itself into a network share on a server with an interesting name, e.g. "Company Payroll Figures.doc"

Apologies for length,

Rob

I've been asked by a friend how to download TV shows for viewing on a PC or
burning to DVD.

I loaded iTunes and noted it had only a very limited selection of TV
episodes available for purchase.

So I googled and came across tv.org, which appears to be a peer-to-peer
sharing service, with a membership fee requirement. Across the home page
are emblazoned:
"Unlimited TV show downloads"
"Millions of users"
"Never miss an episode again"
"Plus unlimited Movie downloads"
and on the membership signup page:
"100% spyware and adware free"

When I hear "peer to peer file sharing" I tremble (spyware / trojans /
illegal / etc.). Anyone using this and happy with it? Not looking for
in-experienced commentary (I can do that myself), thanks.

thanks,
Carl
