None of the Adaware and Symantec fixes worked for me either. Should add, I
run win98.
Here are my notes from this effort:
"Got rid of winfixer AKA vundo and couple of other names. The trick that
worked (it appears) was a batch file in VundoFix, which calls HijakThis to
get a report. Not all the files suggested on the net were present on my
laptop, but it seems VundoFix did the trick. Other apps that recognize
Winfixer are SpyBot, Ad-Aware, FixVundo (Symantec), but fix it only until
rebooted.
Added winfixer in Hosts file. "
> What is sort of "amazing" is that this is a very common problem affecting
many, many users. I would have thought that by "now" many spyware removal
apps would have added it to the spyware they look for and would have a
built-in automatic removal process. From the long manual procedure Aluria
suggests this seems to indicate that Winfixer is a very nasty, difficult
spyware to get rid of.
This could be, because this bug is being "upgraded" as the removal tools
start working. Besides, it appears that it's semi-legitimate way to force
you read adds. Have you read, where you pick it up? Of all things some beta
version of IE.

PS If you can't find VundoFix, I can e-mail direct. No guarantee that it
will work for you, but did for me.
