I believe that 'incremental' is slightly misleading.

In version 7 their incremental images work on a sector by sector basis, so if files get moved around on the disk, even if they are not changed in any way this will show up as a difference that the incremental image picks up. So, if you were to defrag your drive Acronis would see that a lot had changed and so make a large incremental.

I don't know if this is still the same in version 9, but it seems likely.
