Re
Right click on the bar icon and then click on "Close"? (Alt-F4) If it closes
the application, what do you mean by "will not interrupt the application"?
Will not interrupt - as in if the application is using CPU, and ignoring
your keyboard and mouse input
then the task manager approach will take control from the application
using the icon in the task control bar does not go and give is such an
effective kicking to get it to give up using all available cpu cycles

Re
How is clicking a button different from "Close"?
well close implies the menu system managed by the application
the button on the windows title bar implies that windows gets asked to tell
the application to terminate.
so if the application has told windows to tell it if it's to terminate, then
there is the extra step of windows handling the mouse selection
or - windows could be set to just get on with terminating the application,
and closing the window.

Re exiting, or being closed
If, in a bar, you get told by a fellow drinker to shut-up, and leave
is it any different if it's your boss, your friend, a 6'6" ice-hockey jock,
or the 70Kg fellow from the local fast food place
They all convey the same message, but probably use different language, and
body posture to do it.
Then again, it could be that the bar owner gets a couple of police officers
to remove you from the premises and take you with them.

One way you have a choice, and may take action to indicate your displeasure
at being asked to leave, then, or on the way out.
the other way - you're out with little chance to do any damage!

Re references - none specific -
Just learnt during over 30 years in IT, including systems engineering,
software, comms, drivers and OS writing, variously coding in C, assembler,
machine code, etc.
However, a simple look at some of the MSDOS and windows API's can be very
alarming with the things that can be done to a system in a few bytes of
code.
