She wants to do what's easiest and most foolproof. She doesn't like
fiddling with computers. The DSL people will give her a modem as part of
the service. That's enough for the wired connection once she has a card,
right? And if she wants wireless, she needs to add a router and a wireless
receiver card. Am I right about this? And is your modem/router all in one
piece? What model Linksys is it?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Eve,
It's not clear what your friend wants for this laptop (unless I missed a
detail) - a wireless link or a wired link.
If wired, then any PCMCIA card similar to the one you mentioned below
(10/100 MB Ethernet Cardbus PC Card) should do the trick, connected to an
ADSL modem/router (wireless version will be useful later). For example, I
use a Linksys wireless ADSL modem/router which has 4 wired ports, 1 of
which is used for the desktop PC (on which the router sits).
If wireless, then the ad hoc PCMCIA card should do the trick, again with a
wireless ADSL modem/router. If the laptop travels, this would be the best
solution.
Retro-fitting a mini-PCI NIC ($25?) might be problematic (RJ45 present?),
IF you can still find one!
Setting up the ADSL connection is relatively easy these days. Once the NIC
is installed, select auto everything for its TCP/IP settings. Connect to
the router, run Internet Explorer & follow the router's set-up
instructions. You will be asked for the ISP user name & password, etc.
Don't forget to save the config in the router!
For the memory size, if your friend can get into the control panel
(system), she should be able to tell you what processor & how much RAM.
If they just want to surf a bit & do E-mail, a huge amount of RAM is not
necessary.
