Hi, folks,
This one has me stumped. I turned on my home computer last night and boy
was it slow. Task manager showed that "explorer.exe" was using 100% of t
he
CPU. Poking around, I found that if I reboot with my cable modem on
"standby", everything is fine. As soon as I bring the modem back up,
"explorer.exe" CPU time goes back up to 100%. Putting the modem back on
"standby" doesn't help. However, ending "explorer.exe" and then restarti
ng
explorer.exe does the trick; until logging off or rebooting, then the
problem is back. I brought it to work with me today to work on it and as
soon as I put it's IP address in the firewall to give it Internet access,
"explorer.exe" pegged the CPU. So, the problem only occurs when the
computer can connect to the Internet. I ran virus and spyware scans and
came up empty. I ran a rootkit scan after restarting explorer.exe and fo
und
nothing. I'm now running a rootkit scan after rebooting and with
"explorer.exe" at 100%.
The only thing out of the ordinary is that last Friday, my wife allowed o
ur
two nephews on it to play online games unsupervised. That may or may not
have anything to do with it.
Does anyone here have any ideas what might be going on? Thanks.
