Thanks for completing the story. Every now and then Windows will lose its marbles and just need rebooting. That's probably the case here. If you see similar problems again, and no evidence of any compromise, then you may be looking for a hardware failure.

Complete Virus Scan and Spyware scans come back negative (except for cookies). But to answer your questions completely; > 1. Which update(s) are not installed as identified by the Windows Update - Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161) - Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756) - Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807) - Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756) That's the details of the problem I WAS having. I tried letting the Updates install at shutdown yesterday, and that was successful. All the updates are now installed. Perhaps I was not specific enough in my original post, but on re-boot, the problems with internet and windows explorer disappeared. All the problems have now disappeared and the updates are installed. This is the first time that the automatic update has not functioned for me. BTW, four other computers on the same network seemed to update without issue.
