Is the following true?

The 'standard' means of closing an application is to use File-->Exit
The 'standard' means of closing a window (but not the running
application) is to use Close Window (Red/Black X)
Microsoft introduced a 'new' feature that when the last open window
of a running application was closed, it would also exit/quit the
application... IF no other processes were running from that
application! Thats the key point... IF there are no other processes runniing.
The term 'new' is relative & I'm not sure what you mean by it as to
the other it depends on how the app is written. Some apps when
closing the last window will terminate the application whether it's
running or not but then again some will politely ask if you want to
terminate the app & any processes. Some apps actually do not
terminate when clicking the X but rather the app minimizes to the
tray whether there is a process running or not. TypeItIn is an
example of the later & it has no File/Exit but just an Exit. I
certainly would say that your "IF" statement is NOT true tho however
because many apps close whether they have a process running or not
when the last window is closed but this is not my preferred way to
handle it. Eudora prompts one only if a process is running other wise
it closes the app when the parent window is closed but it has many
panes within that can be closed at any time without affecting
processes. Some apps actually have an option of what to do when the
last parent window is closed some where in it's options such as to
minimize or to shut down the app as well as to close the parent
window. I also would stay away from using the term 'standard' & use
the term 'recommended' or 'suggested' because of all the possible
variations. OBTW back to the 'new' thing, way back when I was using
Quarterdeck's Desqview & AT&T Unix when I closed a window it would
terminate the application & all it's related processes so I probably
wouldn't credit MSFT with this feature.
FWIW I almost never use File/Exit but I do use Alt F4 quite a bit. ;-)
May we be so rude as to ask what prompted this historical programming
question ? If writing a book I hope you credit the fine members of
the outstanding WinHome List. ;-)
