Bad application, corrupted windows files, viruses etc.

Yes, what you described regarding system try icons, usually before that the 
screen will go blank and only show the background colour, however depending 
on the speed of the machine, you might blink and miss that. Checking the 
event logs will usually say something relevant.

Which means NOTHING, you need to manually check and make sure all the current 
updates are done. Too often I've seen automatic updates stop until the latest 
version of Windows Installer is manually installed (ver 3.1 iirc).
