Thanks for all the replies guys.

I had already considered most of the alternatives mentioned, and with most
of the add-ons, I decided they would not be cost effective, since even just
adding a pair of antennas to the 54G would run well over a third of the cost
of the WRT54GX4 ($19 * 2 + $9 shipping) and I would still be using ~5 year
old technology. Adding a WAP would cost around the same and might or might
not extend my range out to where I would need it. With my house's
configuration, there really is not a good place to locate one without a
number of intervening walls. Similar problem with relocating the 54G.

After looking at the Circuit City demo Wayne referenced, I thought the
LinkSys WRT300N might be the answer, since it is available from other
sources for $118 net delivered but that one apparently is not ready for
prime time. Every review I read, including CNET, says stay away. It fails
abysmally at extended ranges, which is ~supposed~ to be one of its prime
advantages!

Since there really is no urgency to do this, it appears my best bet is to
just wait for the technology to mature a bit before jumping in. I could
always run cat 5 out there but that still would not address the dead spot(s)
around the house...

Again, my thanks to all who made suggestions. They are very much
appreciated.

Or an expander ?

Or wait a little while & go with Wireless N
<http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/genericContent.do?oid=151596> [make
sure you launch the flash demo] that is suppose to be 12x the speed &
4x the range of G ? Here's Linksys High Gain antennae

or maybe you can relocate just you existing antennae with something
like
