Paul Allen left Harvard in the mid 70s and went to Albuquerque to
persuade MITS that they needed a BASIC interpreter that he and Gates
could write for the Altair computer. When MITS signed on the dotted
line, Gates followed him. That led directly to the founding of
Micro-Soft (that was its name then) in the mid 1970s.

True. Windows 1.0 appeared in the mid 80s I think. Not many people
noticed. I think Windows 3.0 and 3.1 were early 90s, and people did
notice those.
