Go here for more in depth information on what Microsoft calls
User Account Control: http://blogs.msdn.com/uac/
I'm not beta testing Vista myself (no time, really) and my only
exposure thus far has been what I've read here and on the web. The
video and blog in that link make it sound promising, as far as
actually running things as a standard user, without all of the
headaches that doing so in XP often entails.
My big question, I guess, will be just which flavor of Vista I will
need and what it's going to cost me. From what I have read, Vista
will run on both of my desktop machines, but probably not the
laptop. Anyway, will the Home Premium version allow me to lock down
the kids' computer the way I wish I could in XP Home, or will I need
Ultimate (with it's ultimate price tag)? Will the UAC allow me the
level of control I'm hoping it will regardless of version? (Mostly
rhetorical questions, but feel free to answer if you have one.)
Hopefully, they realize how much things have change since XP was
developed and just how many of us now have home networks, with the
need to have even more control over the kids' accounts than
before. I was ecstatic when XP came out (Who wouldn't have been
after 6 months of using WinMe?) and expected a lot out of it. By
and large, I have actually enjoyed using XP. I hope I'm not setting
myself up for disappointment by expecting that much more from
Vista. (Fingers crossed.)
