if problems happen again, it'd be good to:

1. run ipconfig /all at the command prompt and see what your PC/server
   thinks is going on

2. log into your router and find its log of dhcp assignments and other
   happenings and see what it thinks is going on.

The isp's rec. that you switct to dynamic dns probably just quietly
repaired a bogus setting that somehow crept in.  The real question
is how did it creep in?  A disk error seems like a real long shot
for that sort of thing.  Although it is just a little too pat to
say it might be spyware or a virus ... it could be.  Note that if
your XP ftp server is running in a DMZ because it is serving up
files on the Internet, it may be more exposed, and it is important
that it has all its updates and some sort of software firewalling
in place.  The thing that happened two weeks ago, might be that one
of your system's got infected.
