AD lets you place things like stock tickers & sports scores on the desktop that are updated automagically as long as one has an active internet connection. There used to be an app by the name of PointCast that I liked that updated news stories & the like according to your preference that I thought was much better than AD but as we know the best product does NOT always win. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PointCast_(dotcom)>

History

"The introduction of the Active Desktop marked Microsoft's attempt to capitalize on the short-lived push technology trend lead by PointCast. Active Desktop placed a number of "channels" on the user's computer desktop that provided continually-updated information like news headlines and stock quotes without requiring the user to open a Web browser."
