They also get to use a HUGE amount of customer cash for a couple of months.
Interest on it is big bucks. 
And a lot of folks do just drop (or forget it) the rebate the first time the
3-d party rebate company says it was improper/lost/fubared...
That's the profits.
And the manufacturer gets rid of a pot load of older stuff.
REALLY, volume is the key to their profit.
