Of course, you could always ask someone to call you and then tell them to
wait a minute while you turn on the fax machine......

I cannot use my existing answering machine because it is built-in to the
wall-mounted phone in the kitchen.
And I have no room to add another answering machine. Hmmmm...maybe I
could buy a bigger desk -- mine is only 4.5 feet wide -- and then I would
have room. Would that be simpler than using answering machine software???

You had obviously ruled out option 2 as not feasible. Most all-in-ones
have a fax/tel detection switch, so you let them answer first.
Can't recommend any answering machine software as I haven't tried anything
like that in over 10 years. I've used the telco voice-mail service for
about that time and it is well worth it (about $5/month). Plus people get
to leave voice-mail if you're on another call, too.
