I note the comment about work-related stuff - I hope I wasn't too out-of-bounds! As for professional opinions, what could be better than this list?

This may not be a "professional" list, but there are pros on it. They just lose the neck tie [if they wear one :) ] here.

So, if I connect the FP reader LAN cable to a wireless router, I should be able to see it with a wireless PC? Maybe I'll drag my personal kit to work tomorrow, just to see.

A WAP or WR is basically a wireless hub, so it should work, as long as the FP reader has or can get an IP address that is in the same subnet as the wireless pc. Some WRs have a wireless "isolation" feature where wireless clients are routed directly to the wan, which basically prevents wireless clients from talking to each other, or to wired clients. So be sure to check and turn off the feature if present.
