Learn how to build kernels. It's really easy to do, doesn't require much in the
way of effort, and means you will have a system that is configured better for
your environment. It also means that the kernel source (in /usr/src/linux) will
match the kernel you are running... which is pretty handy.
And by easy to do, I really mean that it's something a Linux beginning admin
should be able to do. The how-to's really make it simple. It also has the
added benefit that it may fix your immediate problem, since it also recompiles
all of the kernel modules.

The installation guide makes the installation really easy to follow and
understand. And you backed up your system before installing anyway, right?
Before you install _any_ program that alters or replaces the kernel you
should make a good backup.
I truely hope you get your machine sorted out quickly.
