I don't know why the support folks told you to use the +bs. A
much better method is to edit the XF86Config file and add the

Option "backingstore on"

in the graphics device section.

I hope the syntax is correct. I don't use X4 currently since I'm
working on a Redhat 6.2 system which doesn't have it installed
yet.
