Hi all This morning I received the new microphone which Lynne ordered for me from Amazon a couple of days ago. We had looked around all of the shops in our local retail park on Thursday morning and, unbelievable though it may seem, not a single one of them stocked anything like what I was looking for. A couple of them tried very hard to sell us bog-standard dynamic microphones which, in all but one case, were nothing more than little plastic sticks with a small microphone on the end. They had little round stands and a 3.5MM jack plug terminator.
When we got home, Lynne went on line and she managed to find one store on Amazon where a quality Logitech microphone was available, and even they only had one of them in stock. So, although the £39.99 price tag may seem a little excessive to some, she ordered that last microphone and it arrived, as I said, this morning. I have just given it a try, having been busy on other projects all day. It is a Logitech A5370 model, and the quality is absolutely superb. It's a uni-directional microphone with a nice solid crome stand. The only odd thing about it is the on/off audio switch. I would have expected the switch to have been something like a rocker with an anti-click mechanism. But no, it's a press button which emits a clunking sound when pressed. At least, that's what you hear when you make recordings. The even more strange thing is that when the button is in the depressed position, the audio is turned off, and when not depressed, it is on. That may be standard, but I must admit it strikes me as a little strange. However, that is a very small price to pay indeed for the quality of the microphone. The frequency response is excellent, and, in my tests, it responds very well to the mid-range frequencies which you would expect it too for the human voice. But at the same time, it respons exceptionally well to the high frequency sounds over the 1800 KHZ range. I tested between 0.5 KHz and 3.5 KHz. There is a marked curve when you get right to the top of the range, and also right at the bottom. But for the purposes it was designed for, I would classify its responses as excellent. So, that would appear to resolve the issue I have had for quite some time. Although I do have a very good quality portable Sony microphone which clips on to the lapel or collar of a shirt or jacket, that microphone is dynamic and it doesn't function with any of the sound cards I tried except the Griffin Technologies iMic. I could possibly have used that, but the quality isn't good enough for the purposes I wanted it for, as in Internet broadcasting and the recording of interviews, Skype based and also round table. So now, on top of everything else, I need to get to work producing my voice track files for use with my playout software. Oh well, just another few sleepless nights I guess. ;-) Gordon <--- Gordon Smith ---> If you wish to contact me privately, please use E-Mail in the first instance, before you try the below.
