Actually, Windows 8 is not too bad, not nearly as bad as I have heard others
suggest it is. Having used it for some time now on my HP Pavilion G6 machine,
I am finding it very stable indeed. Something which I find refreshingly
pleasant for anything Microsoft. I am still amongst those who advocate a total
rewrite for the next version of Windows. That said, I've been hoping for that
ever since the days of Windows 95, and I've been disappointed on each occasion
by just how much Microsoft has papered over the cracks in every subsequent
build.

Apple and other developers have actually done that with their operating systems
and it is high time Microsoft followed suit. I think I'm going to have to
renew my MSDN membership at some point so that I can at least have my say on
the forum.

Anyway, I will let the group know how things go. As a result of my playing
around with Office 2010 I've discovered that if I right-click or use the
applications context key with a portion of text selected, I can then apply a
style to that text by typing in the name or part of the name of the style. I
can also select most of that from a list, which is actually a very nice idea.
Having edited a file on the Mac using Nisus Writer Pro, I'm having to clean it
up a lot to remove unwanted invisible characters and line feeds, so that I can
neatly organise the items using Word. The files don't appear to be in any way
wrongly formatted under Nisus, but interestingly enough Pages doesn't show me
any format info either. I won't discuss OS X apps here because it's off topic.
But I have to admit that selecting styles and processing various elements of
documents seems to be far cleaner under Word 2010 and later than I ever
remember it being under Office 97, 2003 or 2007. It'll be int
eresting to see what happens when I try with Word 2013.

Kind regards
