I am afraid that in this area Jaws is unnecessarily confusing about setting up default voices as it is possible to do this in 2 areas of Jaws settings.
Actually the easiest way to set the default is to go to the Jaws language menu which I admit is not intuitive. I use Jaws from the system tray where the menu options are utilities options then language Help and About. If you are not running Jaws from the system tray it should still be possible to find the language settings menu in the main menu system of jaws but you might need to explore the menus system there to find it. Once you find the language menu a sub menu will come up which will include a voice profiles sub menu option, hitting this will open up a further menu option called default sub menu and under this sub menu you will have listed all your available voice profiles. You simply need to press enter on the voice profile you want to be default and this will check that voice profile as the default profile and that is all that is needed. You do need to have set up your desired default as a voice profile before you can do this. It sounds like you have done this however. The second quick way to adjust Voice Profiles in Jaws is to press Jaws keys plus control plus S. Jaws will announce select voice profile and will have the default voice at the top with the ability to arrow down or use first letter navigation to all available voice profiles. Subject: Re: Jaws & Windows 8.1 Inside Of A Virtual Machine Hello David This is extremely encouraging, so many thanks. I haven’t as yet had the opportunity to install Thunderbird in my Windows configuration. Because of an incompatibility issue I cannot use Fusion at the moment and, hence, cannot use Windows until Lynne gets around to cleaning my VM in Parallels Desktop 9 so that I can just call it up on demand. But I have a native PC laptop or two which would undoubtedly benefit from this information. Just one more question related to Jaws, if I may. I went into the Jaws Options>Voice Adjustment settings. I made sure that all contexts was highlighted. Then I selected the Vocaliser Premium Serena voice was highlighted. CliClicking “Apply” did something odd. Now, when I go to the desktop, Jaws defaults to using the Eloquence profile. I’ve checked and re-checked this option but it won’t change. Why not, any idea? Be mindful that you’re talking to somebody here who hasn’t touched Jaws in any detail since Jaws 3.0 was released way back when. So it’s come as a bit of a culture shock to me. But on the whole, I am very impressed with what I’ve seen of Jaws. By quite some way it is more responsive when using HQ voices than Window-Eyes is. I have used NVDA with the InfoVox Ivox voices. It stutters and stammers like nobody’s business. I have the Vocaliser voices for NVDEA but all they sent me was a .ini file and I don’t have a clue at this time how you’re supposed to install, let alone use the things. Again, keep the good info coming, and many thanks. I might add that as a Windows aside another useful development is that Google drive is now completely accessible with jaws 15 on a Windows platform, as it has for some time been on the Mac. In relation to Thunderbird and Outlook I use both on a Windows platform handling different email accounts, though my Outlook is 2010. Essentially I use a portable version of Thunderbird to monitor my Gmail account. I have not found a conversation view in Thunderbird but as I only use this view on the Mac anyway this has not proved too difficult an adjustment. Basically if you do use Jaws with Thunderbird there is a crucial settings change you need to make in Jaws. Once in Thunderbird you need to bring up quick settings using jaws and V. Now type navigation into the search box and then go down and toggle navigation quick keys off. The default will be on. Once you have done this all the default keyboard shortcuts will be available in Thunderbird. So whilst reading a mail you can press B to go back a message in your inbox and F to go forward a mail in your inbox. Pressing the delete key will delete the open message and open the next mail. This is a rapid way of dealing with mail . If in contrast you have navigation keys set to on in Jaws then the Thunderbird keys will not work and pressing B will for example force Jaws to look for a button in the message, even if it is plain text, and F will similarly make Jaws look for a form field. This means that either you have to use the Jaws bypass command before each Thunderbird command or close each message with control W to return to the inbox to open your next mail message which is a pain. Hope that helps. Subject: Jawsws & Windows 8.1 Inside Of A Virtual Machine Hi all I can only sum this up in two words - Absolutely Unbelievable! Rarely, if ever, have I encountered the kind of responsiveness that I am seeing right now inside of a virtual machine running under VMWare Fusion 6.0 Professional on a MMacBook Air with an I5 quad core 2.4 GHZ processor and just 4GB of RAM. I'm probably going to upgrade this to an 8GB machine shortly. But I believe that the SSD makes some difference here. But that's getting off the point somewhat. NVDA is quite responsive. I cannot evaluate Window-Eyes, since my version won't allow me to install it under Windows 8.1. I'm not prepared to pay GW Micro for the privilege of being allowed to run their software. But again, I am straying somewhat off the point. Jaws version 15.09.22 or something, latest version anyway, is just so down right responsive it's unbelievable. In fact, I don't ever remember seeing a Windows-based system which was as responsive as that which I'm seeing right now under this VM, (properly configured). Everything I'm doing with Jaws is just there . under the fingertips in Braille and verbalised via synthetic speech. Currently I'm using the Vocaliser voices for Jaws, as I hate that darn Eloquance torture. I actually have a license for the NVDA vocaliser but I'm not sure how it should be implemented as it came as a .ini file which just opens in NoteTab when I double-click it of course. But again, I'm getting off the point. The only screen-reader I've seen which rivals what I'm seeing now under this virtual machine is VoiceOver under OS X. In fact, I have the two of them running at once doing their respective jobs. They seem to get along just fine, with little interaction between the two. But anyway, I must express my amazement yet again. I actually took just one machine to work today, my Mac. I had OpenBook 9 and Jaws running in Windows, and the usual Mac stuff. Not a single glitch did I encounter all day, including the scanning and OCR of multiple pages from a book under OpenBook. So essentially, I had three speech and Braille systems all working together. I used my little Mini Seika Braille display on OS X. I used a BrailleNote Apex under Windows with Jaws and I used a Focus40-Blue under OpenBook 9, all at the same time and all perfectly seamlessly. Quite, quite astonishing and I have to say a hearty well done here to Freedom Scientific. They've really cleaned up their act over the last few years, and I'm very very impressed indeed with Jaws 15. I particularly like the touch cursor implementation. I've never been much of a fan of screen-readers which radically change the behaviour of touch cursors or touch screen applications. But Freedom have thought this one out excellently well. Those amongst the group who have known me for a long time will know that I've always been a critic of Freedom. But they will, if they truly know me, also attest that I am more than willing to embrace tolerance and change. And my goodness, how Jaws has changed. If the rumours of a total rewrite for Window-Eyes 9.0 are true, and I'm pretty sure that they are, GW Micro has a hard act to follow. That's probably why they've jumped into bed with Microsoft in order to distribute Window-Eyes 8.4 free of charge to Office and Windows users. This bring me to another point. I have Microsoft Office 2013 installed here. What would Windows users advise as a Mail client? I've ruled out Windows Mail because it keeps nagging me to convert my user account to a Microsoft account, something which I do not wish to do. I do have, but have not as yet installed, Thunderbird. I'm not sure whether that is gooder or badder than Outlook 2013. Then again, there may be an even more gooder client out there for all I know. If you know more than me, prey, do tell all.
