Media player

Sorry if this has been discussed before!

Has anyone yet gotten MS Media Player (6.4) to work?
I can make it play sounds, and the sound in ASF files.
It downloads and installs the codecs for mpeg, avi etc but when it tries to 
play it crashes.

RealPlayer 7 works with RM files, but there's the same thing with mpg/avi/mov 
.. it crashes.

I'm using release 20000326
