I created something similar to this awhile back, except that mine included the
ability to validate sectors as good/bad. All that took, from the fsck source I
examined, was reading required sectors. If the sector reads, then it's assumed
to be good.
I'm not sure what became of the patch I submitted, although it included a flag
which turned raw read/write of drives on or off.
