No, that's not a solution, that's a workaround. (And it's -X you want.)
Wine should be able to run commandline programs WITHOUT USING X IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM!
This is a longstanding bug in Wine, and one that periodically makes my blood boil.
The workaround I've used in the past is to create a .winetty directory with special settings to use the tty driver instead of the x driver, but that's a pain in the ass.
