Thank you, Terry, for your kind and generous compliment. As a participant in this year’s reunion, I am honored to have been a part of such a remarkable experience, and like you, I find myself reflecting on what transpired just six weeks ago.

I have been meaning to write to my comrades who helped make those few wondrous hours come into being, but I’ve been overawed by the moving and insightful messages that have been posted, so much so that I’ve been struck dumb. What can I write that hasn’t already been written, and expressed better than I could ever hope? The experience of working with such great souls to create those performances in less than a week was nothing short of amazing, all the more so for me in that I had to change from one character to another (albeit a very, very familiar one) just a few days beforehand. I could not have done it without the help of such hard-working, patient, wonderful friends.

As for recalling the “miracle” of the performances themselves, I don’t know what happened. It just happened. Everyone worked together so that each scene built perfectly on what had come before. We were in sync. Just as it should be. I still am haunted by many of the moments from “Midsummer Night’s Dream”; costumes, music, words, expressions, the phrasing of certain lines, the timbre of a player’s voice. I am still amazed at the interactions that came together in “Much Ado” on the night of the performance, as if it were life itself. I felt a part of that world; not just some player worrying about remembering words or knowing where to stand (and you all know how much trouble I have with both). We talk about energy being shared and how it accumulates in the course the successful performance. I don’t know the particulars of such things, but something very much like that happened that night and, I have no doubt, the next afternoon. I felt that astounding effect when several people contribute to a task, and the result is greater than the sum of the parts.

If there be magic in the world, these were fine examples. I am gratified that you and others were there to share them with us.

Thank you again for your warm and wise reflections. Thanks to all who were part of the forty-fifth anniversary reunion. It was a time, was it not?

All my love,

John

These last few days, I have been falling into reveries about the reunion plays.

I can't get over how tightly they were performed. Crisp and energetic and funny and moving. Both of them.

When I was there watching it seemed well, of course-- that's the way Winedale works.

But now that a few weeks have gone by, I am struck once again by what a miracle it is that two plays can be so perfectly realized in just a week.

And I wanted to say again to all of you who performed at the reunion, what a profound pleasure it was to witness the results of your thought, your sweat, yours whims, your camaraderie and your playing.

It was enchanting. Just like it should be, has always been, and always will be.
Love to you.
Terry
