There are probably a lot of variables (individual laptop, how good the slot is grounded in the chassis, etc.), but in my own case, on a Toshiba laptop, I've become fond of the Netgear WAG511 on Wild Packets Airopeek, and the Cisco CB21AG on AirMagnet. Not to say that there is much science behind these choices, but from a "good fit" perspective, these combinations have done well for me. (For what it's worth, between the two, Air Magnet is my preferred tool overall, but I like the Airopeek's decode view better).
