You can run Cisco WCS without location appliances. WCS will still give
you location data but not as fast and readily available as you would in
conjunction with the appliance. Our network is loaded up with about
2000~ AP's on 10 WiSM's (20 controllers) plus 3 standalone 4400
controllers. We also exclusively run WCS here without the location
appliance and besides a few annoying bugs here and there it works pretty
good for a network this size. Location appliances can also get pricey
with a large deployment and client base. Each appliance can only handle
2300 objects. That includes wireless clients, AP's, rouge AP's, rogue
clients and RFID tags.

We looked at AMP but were turned off by the price and aggressive sales
tactics. It's a good looking product and they will even give you a 30
day demo license.

In my opinion, you'll need a management server for that size network-
you may want to consider AirWave's AMP product. Also, research very
carefully the known bugs for whatever version of controller code you'll
be using. And get used to the idea that a lot of things require a reboot
of the access points to implement (like multiple SSIDs and WLAN
override)- can be challenging on a prod system. Finally- if you plan on
using location-based stuff, look at your options. AMP will do that too,
but if you go with Cisco's location appliances, work with your SE to
truly define how many "objects" you'll need to track and what this
really translates to in terms of the number of location appliances
you'll need.

We use PEAP, and have found that Cisco's ACS is a great fit as the
authentication server.

Oh yeah- two important items: sign up for the bug track tool at Cisco
for your new wireless gear- is a must. Also- visit the TAC discussion
forums often, read about others' headaches.

Best of luck to you,

   Guys,

I am assume the deployment of few 6500/WiSM and about 800 AP. So far
just read up on the Doc ( which is very primitive ! ).

Deployment will be mix of LEAP/PEAP environment.

   Any word of wisdom? gotcha?

   TIA,
