We use a different vendor, but use the portal built into the controller. One issue to consider is the timeout. We had users, especially of handheld devices who complained that when they powered down their device after being connected to the guest wireless, that they always had to reauthenticate when they popped the power back on. We were able to increase the session timeout to an acceptable level as a result, because the default was extremely low.
Cheers Matt From: The EDUCAUSE Wireless Issues Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:wireless-...@listserv.educause.edu] On Behalf Of Jamie Pogach Sent: July 17, 2009 8:45 AM To: WIRELESS-LAN@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] More on Guest Wireless We are moving away from our current guest wireless architecture. We are a Cisco shop and plan to utilize the wireless controllers (WiSM) for guest access. We plan to use the web-passthrough feature with a customized agreement page. We have been testing on our current 4.2.130 version of code. We have also upgraded a test environment to 6.0.182. The other engineers want to move to the 6.x code, but I'm concerned. Does anyone have any feedback on using the Cisco controllers as the portal for wireless guest access? Which version? I know there are some caveats with web-authentication in certain versions. I believe it had something to do with number of connections. We hope to avoid that, using passthrough. Also, in general, any thoughts on which code train to put our testing efforts on? We only have a couple weeks to decide, so that we may have this deployed by mid-August. Thank you for your time and feedback.
