We do this as well, but with Cisco gear, and yes I have had to make 1 Mbps mandatory on those aps for the scanners to work. The scanners are Handera brand, but I have also used some old symbol scanners for testing and setup.

They run on a non-broadcast SSID with mac authentication over our Aruba infrastructure (special AP groups carrying the SSID).
