Great video- I do concur. For what it’s worth, one pitfall I find with
educating the uninitiated on interference here at Syracuse is usually
immediately following the lesson, there’s lots of “I saw a rogue printer and
that’s why my connection is dropping” kind of jumping to conclusions. I’ve
found that you have to make the interference topic part of a holistic
discussion or it becomes a convenient scapegoat for everything.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all the comments and feedback.

The first rendition of the video didn’t have the 802.11ac portion at the end.
We felt that the video had a negative spin to it and we wanted it to end on a
more positive note. We haven’t figured out the best way of getting this video
out to our campus community, yet. We are planning on posting it on our
HuskyNet website. We are thinking about playing the video in our HuskyTech
computer store. Others have suggested that we send the video out to the entire
campus via e-mail.

Our campus is entirely 802.11n and we support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. About 30%
of our active clients connect using the 5GHz band. We originally designed our
wireless network around 802.11b and the 2.4GHz band. We are now buying
802.11ac access points and we are making plans to move the entire campus to
802.11ac. Since our wireless network is designed around the 2.4GHz band moving
to 802.11ac and the 5GHz band means adding many more access points. This
presents a financial challenge. If we have the budget we are looking at timing
the upgrade around the release of 802.11ac Wave 2.

Thanks again everyone,

I agree. Very well done.

Remember, you do not have to have AC to run 5 GHz. N does it just fine as long
as the client device has the 802.11N radio with the 5 GHz feature -- usually
optional at a higher price. Since we have very few AC APs (18%), most of our 5
GHz use comes from the N clients with a very few running A. For 5 GHz usage, we
are hovering in the 30% range for Campus & 42% for ResNet right now with about
75% of our 5,000 APs being 802.11N capable (some older dorms are not yet
upgraded beyond G).

Maybe you need to slightly update your presentation to cover wireless printers
& change the closing about AC (though, admittedly, that is what new machines
will come with).

Do you send this out to prospective students so they know something about what
to buy before they get to campus?

I have to say, this was a rather well written video that covered it all for the
non-technical people (I call it dumbed down) and has flashy pictures too! It’s
hard managing the wireless network when the upper administration just don’t get
why it works in one building but not another.

Great work!

Hello Everyone,

Here at SCSU one of our biggest WiFi challenges is dealing with interference.
We created this informational video that I think may be useful for everyone.
Please feel free to share this video as you see fit.
