Hey there, We do the same thing at LU, but on two separate vlans utilizing Aruba airgroup. Unfortunately, Google in their wonderless glory made it a dependency for initial setup, and baked it into the app.
To my knowledge there is no away around it, as it requires seeing the devices on the same SSID before finalizing configuration. I would love to hear if anyone has figured a way around it as well. I attempted to reach out to our google rep with no avail. Once configured, you can move the handset to a separate ssid/network. T.J. The backend is the same network and hands out the same IPs. Recently, the Google Home app doesn't seem to want to complete the setup until it sees that the phone and Google Home Mini are on the same SSID.
