I then used ifconfig_wlan0="WPA" in /etc/rc.conf and then # service netif start wlan0 I then waited until it associated. Then I did # ifconfig wlan0 192.168.123.45/24 and no crash! And I can ping other machines on the same net. Manually adding the default route made everything work.
